Draper Aden Associates provided Civil Engineering support to the Naval Facilities Engineering Command for the construction of a decentralized steam generation and distribution system at the Naval Support Facility at Indian Head, Maryland. We provided surveys and civil engineering design for multiple sites, stormwater management, and support to NAVFAC for permitting of land disturbing activities. We also coordinated the efforts of several environmental consultants for cultural resources investigations, wetlands delineation and impact assessments, and hazardous material testing and abatement design. This design-build project consisted of the development of a Primary Nodal Plant for steam generation and seven smaller satellite Secondary Nodal Plants with boilers to support smaller mission operations not served by the new steam system. Following construction of the new plants, an aging steam plant and multiple support buildings were demolished and the site reclaimed. Work also includes development of a Utility and Energy Management Building and associated areas for operations and parking.
The construction phase of this project involved conventional stakeout and GPS machine control layout of the new naval facilities including parking lots, utilities infrastructure, the new primary and secondary plants, and the Utility and Energy Management Building.
