At DAA, we are overflowing with exceptional employees and each month we like to choose one to highlight. You can also check back next month to see who is featured in the employee spotlight! This week we are featuring Karen Weber, Senior Project Geologist in the Environmental Division.
How long have you been with the firm? 15 Years
What inspired you most about joining Draper Aden Associates?
When I started at DAA, I was in the field 100% of the time. It was great. I still love field days.
In your experience here, is there a project that really stands out/was your favorite/was challenging? Why?
I’ve had numerous projects that were enjoyable because they were challenging. All of my best stories involve a unique experience in the field. I told someone the other day that I was looking forward to some field work because the site is going to be very challenging and I thought it was going to be fun. She said it might make for a fun story later, but it’s not going to be fun while we are in it. But the fact that each site is unique and every little possibility can’t be predicted is part of what keeps the job interesting.
I will say, the worst is that moment when you are standing next to a messy, noisy drill rig and suddenly it goes silent and you realize there is no resistance on the drill rod because you hit a void.
Favorite quote or words of wisdom?
“So much time, so little to do. Wait a minute. Strike that. Reverse it.” From Gene Wilder in the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
What is one of the firm’s core values that resonates most with you and why?
Collaboration – I think we are most successful when we pull together to deliver a product that exceeds the client’s expectations. Shout out to Janet here for all the times we’ve hovered over a computer trying to get the wording just right. And when we get there we both know how good it feels to get it right.
Favorite sports team?
Virginia Tech Football (yes, even after this past season)
What TV show, movie, and/or book are you obsessed with right now?
Favorite Movies – Office Space, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Young Frankenstein
Have you been on a recent vacation or trip that you loved?
My dad took my brother, myself, and our kids to a cabin in Green County after New Year’s. No electricity or running water. Just us and the wilderness. Dad was in his element and the kids had a blast.
What was the first concert you ever attended?
Metallica (1992 I think)
Is there something you do or like that would surprise people?
I’m not sure anything I do surprises people anymore. Most people just know I do anything and everything for my kids.
