DAA Provides Structural Services for Hardywood Brewery

What started as a passion to brew great beer with purpose has grown into a major craft brewing player. Hardywood Brewery, established in 2011, was a catalyst for the craft brewing explosion in the Richmond region and continues to gain prominence throughout the country. When the brewer was looking for a new facility to produce more beer, they set their sights on Goochland County, about a dozen miles from their original location in Richmond’s Scott’s Addition neighborhood. Draper Aden Associates was proud to be on the project team that helped make Hardywood’s vision a reality. Working with Price Studios, the project architect, DAA provided structural engineering services on the more than 50,000-square-foot brewery with tasting areas.

The new Hardywood West Creek facility would add to the brewery’s existing production space and taproom in Richmond and its taproom in Charlottesville. The $28 million Hardywood West Creek officially opened in April and has already become a popular destination in the region.

The firm’s work included structural framing and foundation design for the new building. Framing featured exposed steel framing consisting of open web joists and custom trusses, steel beam and column framing, and concrete floor slabs. Foundations consisted of shallow reinforced concrete spread footings with a small basement to be incorporated under the brew tanks that allows for tunnel access to a future basement. Given Hardywood’s growth, DAA designed the foundation and structural framing to allow for future expansion.

Hardywood West Creek includes a production facility, taproom, mezzanine, outdoor patio, beer garden, and food truck plaza. The facility has the ability to brew 35,000 barrels of beer annually. To learn more about Hardywood West Creek, check out this Richmond BizSense story.
