How long have you been with the firm? 15 Years   What inspired you most about joining Draper Aden Associates? When I started at DAA, I was in the field 100% of the time. It was great.  I still love field days.   In your experience here, is there a project that really stands out/was your favorite/was challenging? Why? I’ve had numerous projects that were enjoyable because they were challenging. All of my best stories involve a unique experience in the field.  I told someone the other day that I was looking forward to some field work because the site is going to be very challenging and I...

Draper Aden Pays Tribute to Black History Month

Each year since 1976, February marks the month-long celebration, known as Black History Month, where tributes are paid to generations of African Americans who have struggled with adversity in their lifetime to achieve full citizenship in American society. The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the rest of society, join in to celebrate and promote Black History Month while also highlighting some of America’s African American heroes.   Because Draper Aden Associates is a values-oriented firm with a mission to create a lasting positive impact in the lives of those we serve, we would like to honor some of the African American heroes who have made it their legacy to do the same, having engineered the pathway for many other African Americans.   Each week on our social channels (Facebook, LinkedIn and...

DAA Environmental Team Launches Enviro Wiki II

Extensive research over the past 30 years has greatly improved our understanding of various environmental topics. While the results of this work are readily accessible to industry experts and academics, much of this information has not percolated down to the people that actually manage, regulate, and implement projects. This has significantly reduced the benefits of this research and increased the costs of managing environmental liabilities. New approaches are needed to communicate this information to users in a timely and easily-accessible manner. With support from DoD research program ESTCP, Draper Aden’s Environmental team is currently developing  the Environmental (Enviro) Wiki , to communicate more readily accessible, current information on environmental restoration and other important environmental topics including contaminated sediments, natural resources, water and wastewater, air and climate change impacts to a variety of users in a timely and easily accessible fashion. The overall format is similar to Wikipedia with short ‘encyclopedia’ type...

EJ TODAA: A Deeper Look Beneath the Surface

Before coming to DAA, if you were to ask me what I thought the first step in building a structure was, I would have said it was having a solid foundation on which the building will stand. But how do we determine whether the soil beneath the surface is suitable enough to build on? The answer to this question is Geotechnical Engineering.   Geotechnical engineering consists of engineering the behavior of the earth's material above and beneath the earth's surface, which is the foundation on which all constructed facilities bear. Our geotechnical team evaluates the unique conditions and potential challenges of subsoil conditions at a given site and provides foundation recommendations to fit the specific needs of our clients. Our team estimates the magnitude and location of the loads to be supported, plans and executes subsurface explorations, determines the soil parameters by conducting field and lab tests, and designs foundations as safely...

EJ TODAA: Engineering the Experience of Excellence through Field Design

Throughout my athletic career, I am grateful to have played football on every level, from high school to the NFL. I have seen a lot of different playing surfaces and have experienced the atmosphere of several different stadiums. When it was fourth and goal in the last minute of a game that decided our bowl eligibility, I was not thinking about the design and planning efforts it took for me to stand on the field safely. I was thinking about my teammates, the fans who cheered us on, and the coaches who had prepared us for that exact moment. Everyone in attendance during a game is on the edge of their seats, entirely focused on the one potentially season-changing play, not on the design of the field. This is where Draper Aden Athletics comes in. Draper Aden Athletics creates athletic facilities that provide these edge-of-your-seat experiences and memories that are...
